You’ve probably heard other mom friends talk about having the dreaded “ab gap” and needing to “close it”.
They’re referring to the common postpartum condition called Diastasis Recti Abdominis (DRA for short).
I’ve got news for ya’,
THE GAP AIN’T ALL THAT.
While the word Diastasis does mean separation, and Recti Abdominis refers to the recti muscles aka your six pack muscles, the name of the condition is actually a bit misleading because it’s not just about how wide the gap is in your midline, it’s more about the health of the connective tissue down the middle of your abdomen and how that connective tissue acts.
Does it have integrity?
Can it create tension?
Do your fingers sink into it?
Is there a springiness to it?
These are just a few things you can look for and tell you more about the status of your diastasis than just the width of the gap.
Did you know that a wide gap doesn’t mean your diastasis is worse, and a narrow gap doesn’t mean your diastasis is better?
Check out today’s video to learn more about what you should be measuring down the midline other than the width of the gap.
